Why We Need to Read The Bible – Peace and Joy in The Storm

One reason why we need to read the Bible is because the word of God is our anchor in the storm.

When you make it a practice to read the Bible and pray every day, you will gain more knowledge about the Bible.

Over time, that knowledge will lead to wisdom and that wisdom will help you to maintain your peace and joy in any storm that comes your way.

When things are going well, we can tend to not give God the credit and ignore the things that bring us closer to Him, like prayer and studying the word of God.

Going to a good Bible-teaching Church is a great thing, but is it enough? Probably not.

Church is a once a week thing, but God wants to build an intimate relationship with you each and every day.

If you have trouble reading and understanding the Bible, see below for FREE Help from Thru The Bible with Dr. J Vernon McGee.

Storm Over WaterThe Peace and Joy Anchor in Any Storm

If you’ve made the decision to seek an intimate relationship with God and obey Him no matter what, you will undoubtedly experience seasons of difficulty and uncertainty.

Your walk with God is a journey of faith, and there will be situations when your trust in Him will be tested.

Cling to the word of God and your troubles and doubts will be repaired and filled.

By taking the time to read the Bible and pray everyday you will gain an understanding of the vital importance of Christ in your life.

You may need to practice some if you don’t have a lot of experience reading the Bible, but you will get better at it and you will find it very rewarding to develop wisdom, peace and joy that can only be learned from the Bible.

You may want to review Scripture passages you heard at Church or you may want to try the challenge of reading the Bible from cover to cover – this can bring a very broad perspective of God’s word.

For beginners, I recommend starting with the Gospel of John.

God is Your Shield and Protector

Numbers 22:10-12

10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,

11 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.

God will shield and protect you just as He shielded Israel from harm when the people didn’t even know what they needed protecting.

He caused other nations to be sore afraid of Israel and even went to unusual lengths to keep Israel from being cursed.

God was so powerful and convincing that even the pagan prophet Balaam had to submit to God’s will and not curse Israel for Balak.

Quote About the BibleThe Way, The Truth and The Life

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)

Do not read the Bible with any skepticism, but trust God at His word and take it all in as the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

God’s Word is absolute truth and a solid anchor when in your life you experience trouble or heart ache.

You may not know how God is going to bring about what He has promised you, including eternal life, but He is keeping every promise spoken through His Word.

He will never deceive you and He will never disappoint you, and He will never change His mind about what He has revealed by His Word.

The Word of God Prospers

Isaiah 55:8-13

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

You really want to be an all-inclusive part of God’s great family and participating in things like prayer, Church and charity is part of the package.

Reading the Bible every day is another one of those things you should participate in to grow in your faith in Jesus Christ.

Strength, Guidance and Comfort

Romans 15:4

4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

When things in our life go wrong we can tend to only turn to God as like an emergency button.

If this is you, it’s okay, ask God for forgiveness for ignoring Him and try better to make the word of God part of your every day life so you grow closer to Jesus and to Him and are more prepared next time things don’t go your way.

When trouble strikes like a tidal wave, God’s word is an anchor of strength, guidance and comfort to keep you steady.

Think of the Bible as God’s love letter to YOU.

  • Dear Alexander,

Thanks again for another great insightful post.

Indeed God is our Shield and Protector!

John Ruskin’s quote is awesome and so true, I realized it in my life. When we read the bible again and again we understand it better and get new revelations.

Thanks again for the great and sound advice. To be honest, I miss my daily morning prayer and bible reading some days and I am going to focus on it. Thanks for reminding the importance of bible reading via your post. Very helpful!

Thanks a lot for the referring to “Thru The Bible with Dr. J Vernon McGee” and I am planning to listen to it and learn our LORD’S word more.

    GOD Bless!

    Your Friend,

    • You will really get a lot out of Thru The Bible, Paul.

There is something about reading the whole bible from beginning to end that I’m really into, lately and Thru The Bible is a perfect complement to this. Reading the whole Bible really gives an interesting broad perspective besides going to Church and getting other perspectives on various parts.

We will spend all of Eternity understanding our Holy, Holy, Holy God and His perfect Word and I love it every step of the way.

Do the best you can, Paul to get back into your morning prayer and Bible reading. You don’t have to spend a whole lot of time if that’s your constraint, just some. Thru The Bible is in nice little less than 1/2 hour bits that make it real easy to fit in to your schedule somewhere. I listen to Thru The Bible as the last thing of my day as I’m relaxing for bed.

      God Bless You my friend.

  • I had a friend in high school that loved to come over and play video games with me. I had a huge collection of books and he liked to read one of the many bibles I had. He said that one of his favorite ways of reading the bible was to just open it at any random page and just start reading. He would be there for hours sometimes reading not even watching me play games.

I liked to talk with him afterwards and during my game play about what he learned.

Thank you for sharing your cool website with us. I’m going to start praying more. I lost touch with God, I want to talk with him more and pray to him more like I use to. It’s almost as if I forgot.

    • Thank you for your comment, flowstash.

I have done that random opening of the Bible to see what God wants to show me at that particular time in my life and it does provide for some very interesting insights.

Lately though, I’m into reading the Bible from cover to cover and I found this really cool resource to help with this, Thru The Bible…

Thru The Bible is the late Dr. J Vernon McGee’s effort to go through and teach the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation available for FREE Download or Listen Online.

This will really help you get back into God’s word and it comes in like less than a 1/2 hour bits that are real easy to fit into your schedule somewhere. I listen to Thru The Bible as the last thing of my day when I’m relaxing before bed and learn so much.

Try to incorporate prayer throughout your day and when you are faced with something and don’t know what to do or say. This is praying without ceasing like Paul the Apostle taught. Also, getting down on your knees in humility in a private place can be real helpful also, especially with repentance and thanks to God.

God Bless You flowstash and thanks for calling my website cool. I like that. Get back into it with God, you won’t be disappointed.

  • This is a great post about the reasons why we should read the Bible. In my personal experience, I was raised a catholic and then took distance from church. I didn’t like many things about it, and I still don’t.

Recently I started listening to a podcast on spirituality and this man, usually quotes many important men in spirituality, including Jesus. This man opened my eyes about a lot of things that I was not able to understand by myself about what Jesus says and broguht me closer to the Bible again.

It is important to have guidance and our priorities in order.

    • Hi Vivi, thank you for your comment.

It is great to get a variety of perspectives about the Word of God from gifted Pastors and others who speak truth to give us guidance. You do have to have a good grip on Scripture to make sure those you are listening to are speaking truth from the Bible.

I encourage you, Vivi, if you’re not a Church goer to find a good Bible teaching Church to attend. It really helps to get a variety of quality perspectives about the Bible and Church is also great for Worship, Prayer and Fellowship.

      Christ be with you.

  • Wow what a powerful encouragement, am so grateful.

  • It is definitely important to read our scriptures and make sure that we read with understanding. Only going to church or to our temples or mosques though it’s an act of devotion to God, is not enough. We have to remember God every day and reading our holy scriptures is a way to do that. Not only will we feel closer to our God but we will understand the purpose of our lives better too.

    • Very true, Reyhana, the Bible is full of God’s wisdom to help us understand the purpose and direction of our lives.

Personally, I can’t get enough of Scripture and I feel so bad for those who reject it, they are lost in so many ways that will have a negative impact on their lives sooner or later.

Scripture makes me feel grounded, loved, comforted and knowing that God cares deeply for me.

The Bible is Jesus personal promise to me that He cares for me and I will have salvation with Him because I believe in His resurrection power and I repent.

Thank you for your comment, Reyhana, I’m so glad you get a lot out of Scripture also.

  • Hi Alexander

i really concurred with you. Church is an institution while the Bible strengthens our spirituality.
Knowing Christ mustn’t really be determined by the so called famous church, rather your daily commitment to HIM will.
this is really a nice post dear.
i will always check on your Link for more inspirational writeups.
    thanks very much.

    • Yes, Bibian, I like to get a lot of different perspectives about the Bible as well as just reading it.
